When you think of a basement, often the image that conjures in your mind is something dark and dingy. However, a finished, and updated basement can not only add value to your home, but also give you that much needed space you have been lacking. If you are feeling like your drab basement desperately needs to be upgraded to fab, then this post is for you! Say “so long!” to dark and dingy and “hello!” to bright and beautiful.

Neutral Shades

The easiest way to brighten up your basement is to paint the walls a crisp, fresh colour. A natural shade such as white, or light grey is the perfect way to lighten up your space. If your basement is on the smaller side, it’s also a good idea to keep the colours on the wall the same, as this keeps the the flow of the space moving, rather than broken up with different colours on the walls.

Your walls aren’t the only thing you should keep neutral. With the plethora of floor choices available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. To keep your colour scheme consistent, your flooring should follow suit. Consider a light wood to compliment your fresh new wall colour.

Look Up

When considering your lighting choices, choose a few statement fixtures. These unique and eye catching pieces will draw the eye upwards, and give the illusion that your basement is larger. It also  gives more variety and interest to the space.

Invite Nature In

There are a few tips you can incorporate to bring nature indoors. Bringing the outdoors in gives your space pops of colour while reminding you of the vast outdoors. You can add plants, both fake or alive, or photographs of your favourite scenes like the mountains or beach.

Add Texture

Area rugs not only tie a space together, but who doesn’t love the feel of a cozy texture between your toes? This is especially true in spaces like the basement, which can often be cooler than other rooms in your home.

Warm and Cozy

Adding a fireplace not only makes the space feel cozy, but it is also a practical addition. A crackling fire will add extra warmth to your space, while also serving as another source of light.

Say No To Clutter

A cluttered space instantly looks smaller. Consider built in storage to avoid extra messes. By keeping your stuff contained, your space will appear larger. It will also mean less to clean; and, who doesn’t want that!

Now, can’t you just picture yourself wrapped up with a cozy blanket on a rainy evening, with your fire crackling and enjoying your lovely, bright space?

I’d love to know what tips you have for brightening up your basement. Let me know in the comments!
